Saint George Church
Cacouna
This church of Catholic tradition was built from 1845 to 1848. The sculptor
and architect François-Xavier Berlinguet, who designed the interior decor in 1852
in 1858, was only 22 years old when work began. At the end of the 19th century
The exterior appearance of the church is redesigned according to the architect's plans
David Ouellet. We add a bell tower on the chevet, we lengthen the sacristy and we
widens the windows. Minor changes are also made to the interior of
The Church of St. George is a complete example of the evolution of
Religious architecture in rural parishes of Quebec during the first
half of the 19th century. Its neoclassical structural elements bear witness to this.
Its interior decor, also influenced by the neoclassical style, is among the
Berlinguet's first and most important achievements.
The church of Saint-Georges was classified on January 3, 1957.
